Why the Fuck Would Generic Wellbutrin More Than Double in Price in a Mere Thirty Days?!

Did I miss something? Does this have to do with the economy, too?

ARRGGGHHH. I do NOT need this today. I want to cry.

P.S. I had more work to do than I anticipated, this week. Because I obviously have not yet mastered the art of time-management, I will refrain from telling you when I'll post next. Soon. I hope.

Hmmm.....was it somehow affected by the salmonella peanuts? LOL

Or no, wait! The chicken wing shortage because of the superbowl!

Whatever it was, that's just fuckin' weird.

Hmm. I thought it might have something to do with the recall, but it's not on the list.

That sucks. Sorry to hear it.

I'm sorry for your pockets and your pain.

It's because our healthcare system int his country is royally fucked up. They can jack the prices because you're still gonna buy the drugs because you need to treat your legitimate medical condition. They're just bleeding everyone dry before Obama tries to implement a healthcare system that makes the blindest bit of sense.

Incidentally, does bother any of the rest of you ladies that it costs upwards of $1/day NOT to get pregnant. Would it be so terrible to throw a bitch a bone on that one. I can afford it sure, but if I couldn't? If the state did a cost-benefit analysis comparing cost of subsidizing contraceptives v. cost of pregnancies that could be prevented by subsidized contraceptives...what do you think would be the best outcome?

Oh fucking suckety, suck, suck. That is absolutely terrible. Have you tried checking the prices at Wal-Mart/Sam's Club, etc? I know they can be cheaper there than more 'highbrow' establishments. But you probably already know this. Gah, that totally blows, I am so sorry!

Gawd, that really sucks! You have my heartfelt empathy. I have two medications that I need to live a normal (well, normal for me) life, both generics, and I would flip out if they doubled in price without warning or explanation!

Is there a Costco near you? They might be more reasonable in price.

I am so sorry Juniper. That sucks.

AA, I am so with you on that one. Fortunately being still on university health plan, I can get 3 months for 28 bucks, which is just freakin' amazing. In college, I could get $6/month, even more amazing.

So, imagine my amazement to know that my friend, who works for a fucking health care company, pays $60/month for her pills. It's just ridiculous. This is one of my huuuuuge pet peeves, that Viagra can be so easily procured, but pills are friggin expensive and Plan B is not available over the counter. Fuckers. Ohhh man, I'm getting worked up just thinking about it, it makes my blood BOIL.

I just realized, I'm sorry Juniper I have hijacked your comment thread. I hope you are able to find a pharmacy that is cheaper...Have you ever tried walgreens by mail? I use them, and if you have a yearlong prescription, they just mail you stuff, and it's way cheaper than going in store. I think my BC is 28/month in a walgreens store, 28/3 months by the mail-in....i'm not sure if your plan has to be set up with them though...but something to look into.

I'm so sorry to hear that. It makes me kind of nervous, because there's really nothing to keep the shit I'm on from going up too.

Stephanie -

Just because it's not on the list, doesn't mean the recall didn't affect the price. Gouging happens.

That truly sucks. My son just got denied coverage on the only depressant he's taken in years that works well for him and doesn't aggravate other physical problems he has.

They want him to fail for 90 days on another med before approving this one.

Of course, he's already failed on the med they suggest, but it was more than 90 days ago, so they won't count that.

If he goes along with them, they will pay much more for the one or more hospitalizations that will likely result than they would pay for 5 years worth of this med.

Sorry... I too am hijacking.

I had no idea that birth control was so expensive now.

Last I looked (about a year ago) wellbutrin was on WalMart's $4/mo plan.

Thank you all for your support. I'm not kidding. You guys are so great.

It's my bad. I accidentally filled an older prescription; I used to take 400 mg of Wellbutrin a day. A month's supply of tablets for someone taking 300 mg of bupropion a day costs $74 at Wal-Mart. A month's supply for someone taking 400 mg a day costs $165.

Of course, now I have screwed up my dosage a bit. 400 mg a day makes me shake and occasionally hallucinate. (The day I kept hearing Crosstide's cover of Elliott Smith's "Angeles", for example, was hilarious. At least that's one of my favorite songs ever.) 200 mg a day is not enough. I can't cut the tablets because generic Wellbutrin will not dissolve properly if you don't swallow it whole. Besides, it's nasty, nasty bitter. So, there you all have it. Another shining example of my brilliance . . .

JLK: LOL!!!!!!!!!!! I have been steadily eating peanut butter despite all of the salmonella nonsense. I like peanut butter. And I'm picky.

Stephanie: HI!!! Thanks for reminding me about the recall, because I read PalMD's post and promptly forgot about it. And I need to check some other generics out.

Ambivalent: WORD. In a country where everyone's pissed about footing the bill for the Suleman babies (especially here in CA), you'd think we'd be dispensing that shit free of charge. It can't possibly be more expensive for the public to provide free, reliable contraception to those who can't afford it than it is to financially support thousands of "accidental" children from birth to age eighteen. I think a lot, too, about how much "easier" it is for a person to deal with poverty if she doesn't bear any unplanned kids. I'm not callously saying there's ever any circumstance in which poverty's a picnic: I'm saying that it's got to be that much harder for people with unplanned kids, or kids whom they love very much but are barely managing to feed and clothe. It takes an exceptionally strong parent to triumph over this situation. You'd think the rest of us would lend a hand in a way that's better for everybody.

Hermitage: I love you. I'm coming back to your blog soon. Incidentally, that "$4" deal doesn't apply to a lot of generics at Wal-Mart. It applies to fluoxetine, but not bupropion. Bupropion costs even MORE at CVS, and Target, and Walgreens . . . I started filling my Rx at Wal-Mart out of desperation. I wonder if I'm going to feel horrible about ALL my consumer choices for the rest of my life . . .

Dear Perky Skeptic: Costco does drugs? Really? I have to check that out.

Phizzle Dizzle:

No worries about "hijacking". I always like a good conversation.

This is one of my huuuuuge pet peeves, that Viagra can be so easily procured, but pills are friggin expensive and Plan B is not available over the counter.

EXACTLY.

This is the kind of thing I only started paying attention to two or so years ago, when I listened to NPR commentary in which it was pointed out that we've got crazy amounts of advertising for ED pills and "cures" for "restless legs syndrome", but we're patently unwilling to, say, brook advertisements for medications that help recovering alcoholics and drug addicts. It disturbed me that I had never bothered to notice before that segment.

Speaking of addiction research . . .

Hi DuWayne,

It was my mistake, so I hope you're more at ease now.

Dear Donna B.,

Thank you very much for your kind words. And I am so, so sorry that this horrible unfair thing is happening to your son. You cannot imagine how sorry I am. I tried to go off my meds several times because of the price, and I just descended into the same misery that landed me in the hospital once before . . .

You're not hijacking. And it piques my interest that Wellbutrin was ever on the Wal-Mart $4 list. It sure isn't now. I wonder what happened?

To Ambivalent Academic- & all of you- I'm so sorry to tell you this, but my pharmacist backed me up. The new healthcare system that Obama is putting into place is the reason generic wellbutrin has now, as of today, July 14th- quadrupled in price. The pharmacies have to price it according to new federal guidelines. They have no choice. Today, trying to get generic wellbutrin- $255- It was a sad day for me to realize that Obama's plan is crap. I am going to have to stop taking it cold turkey- I have no choice, I can't afford it.

Stephanie Zvan said...

Eizabeth, care to be more specific about the connection between the administration and generic drug costs? The two actions I've seen from the Obama administration are a negotiation with drug companies to cut costs on brand name drugs in half for seniors in some situations and the FTC looking into deals between the companies that make the brand name drugs and those that make generics, deals that result in higher pricing and reduced competition for generics.

JLK said...

That, and Elizabeth - this post is from way before the Obama administration could have even affected it.

AND, if you're paying $255 for generic wellbutrin, I'm guessing you don't have health insurance. And since the whole purpose of the health care plan is to insure people like you who don't have coverage - you're going to benefit the most from this administration. You won't be paying $255 or even remotely close to that for your wellbutrin.
